What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

Thursday, July 4, 2013

If you're here from The Bump, Welcome! I am so glad that you made it on over to my humble little blog! This is my new #1 most read blog post with What to Pack in Your Babies Hospital Bag a close second and Birth Plan: To Have or Not to Have following up in third. If you have any questions or have found certain things that worked best for you feel free to comment and let me know!

I did it! I finally packed my hospital bag! At 36, almost 37 weeks I am happy to say if Foster came tonight we could make do :) No, the nursery isn't done but I'm hoping to have that done within the next week. My glider should also be in within the next week (We got one in but it was cracked :( )

I wish I could let you feel the sense of calm I have over me that I have had since getting everything done. I feel amazing. I don't feel like I have anything to worry about and even the nervousness I was feeling about labor I am not feeling at all. I am looking forward to this amazing experience that I get to go through with the love of my life. As much as I can't wait for my little family of three to become a family of four I'm thoroughly enjoying this huge curtain of love that is over our household.

Now with my little hormonal post out of the way I can get onto what you all came here for! My hospital bag! This is also my hubby's hospital bag and with the extra room that you'll get from using a bigger bag if you receive anything from the hospital (which you will, be sure to take everything home! You're paying for it anyways!) you can easily put it in the bag and make less for your hubby to carry out to the car ;)

Also, please note some things for me are packed in babies hospital bag because they will be in the diaper bag normally so it seems silly to move them back and forth. You can find that post here.

*There are feminine products listed below*

Everything fits so perfect!

Electronics! This can keep you busy through the hours of labor. Don't forget your phone and all the chargers you need! The nice thing about the iPad and iPhone is they use the same chargers and I can plug it into my computer so it's just less stuff to bring.

So this is everything for the hubby. There is one comfy outfit for sleep and the first day and then a change of clothes for the second. If we end up staying longer we don't live far away and I'm sure he'll run out to get food also.

For me I packed two fluffy socks (my feet were very cold during labor last time, which is weird for me)   then I packed a couple pairs of bigger, boy-short underwear. Leave the small, pretty panties at home. Then two nursing bras, neither with under wire.

Now my clothes...I packed one loose weight robe for during labor and right after so I'm not worried about the gown on top of everything, an outfit to change into, a going home outfit and two light weight shorts. Each outfit has one loose shirt, a pair of yoga pants and a lightweight jacket. Be sure the shirt and pants you pack are loose because you'll be sore and if I end up with a c-section I don't want anything tight on it.

Toilettres: Deodorant, Hair Ties, Toothbrush/Paste, Chapstick (big one, your lips will get chapped) Make-up, gimungo Pads (the hospital will give you some but they are HUGE) Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Brush, Hair Dryer, Straightener, Hairspray. I think these are all pretty self explanatory. You'll probably feel pretty yucky after baby so it may be nice to freshen up if you're feeling up to it. I did after L.

My nice slippers for after Foster is here and my gross flip-flops. The flip flops are for walking around before my water breaks and showering. Hospital showers = grody

Camera and Video Camera with chargers (I'm using my camera to take pictures) I just took out my extra lense and put my video camera in it's place.

Your own blanket and pillow. The pillows at the hospital are flat as a pancake and the sheets are pretty scratchy so it may be nice to have your own. Just make sure you have a colored pillow case so it doesn't get taken down with the wash.

My purse. In my Mary Poppins bag I have my ID, SSC, Birth Plan (link here) , Change for food and all that good stuff.

Another thing I got done yesterday was took the carseat all apart, washed it, put all back together and back on the baby setting. It's so tiny! It was all set up for Logan and super dusty and now it's all ready for Foster! I'm waiting to put it into the car just in case we get into a fender bender because then we'd have to get a new one before he's even here. Even though most insurance companies cover a new carseat who wants to deal with that?

I could've packed it into a smaller bag but then I'd have to carry the pillow and blanket separate and like I said above it's nice to have the extra room.

Prenatal vitamins and a folder with your name, baby's name, amd even dads name on it! Put all your important info in it, also put your name on everything. I got switched rooms the next day and the nurses lost some things in the move. (baby footprints) It helps to keep everything together.

This is a comment from my cousin on my FB page that I thought everyone might want to read :)

"Tried to comment on your blog, but it didn't go through.

Washcloth & lavender oil. Doug massaged my back with the oil and we put some on a washcloth and I put it in front of my face while I was breathing through contractions. So relaxing and at the very least, smells nice.

Swim trunks for hubby so he can get in the tub with you while you labor. He didn't end up getting in with me. Instead he sat on the floor beside the tub. It was nice to have the option though. I HIGHLY recommend laboring in a tub as long as possible! Cut my pain in half!

Baby book. Ours had a place for hand and foot prints, and the nurses were gracious to do those for us when they did the footprints at the hospital.

I also recommend the book "Birth Partner" by Simkins. She has a lot of great positions for dealing with contractions, as well as massage techniques for your coach.

And make or have someone make you some padsicles. For when you get home."

Thank you so much!!! I'm due any day now with my first and I was stressing about the hospital bag! Your lists are my absolute favorites! Every other list is so overwhelming and they have so many things that sound so silly and unnecessary! It's nice to hear from a second-time mommy! :)

Awe yay! I'm so glad I could help! I started packing mine with the list from the bump and it was SO much stuff and most of it seemed so silly. Let me know when your little one gets here! :)

Boppy/nursing pillow. Or you end up using a bunch of pillows to prop baby for feeding

Thanks a ton for this handy list! I just have a question, which insurance pays for the baby's car seat? My normal medical insurance will cover my newborn's car seat? I don't know please guide. So if I was to buy it from say Target, I will have to present my insurance card at check out?

Sharmi, I think she meant that if you're in an accident, the settlement you get from your auto insurance company should include money for a new car seat. Wouldn't that be nice if they paid for it in the first place though! :)

Aspen Kelty Marie said...

What Jill said :) It doesn't pay for the carseat out right I don't think

Your Blog Is So Very Helpful. All I Have To Add Is Q-Tips Because When I Wash My Hair My Ears Get Wet So I Have To Have Them. Oh & A Razor & Shaving Cream, Not For My Legs But My Under Arms, Because Ever Since I Got Pregnant My Pits Get Hairy Fast & It Bugs The Crap Outta Me When They Are Hairy. Besides Those Two Things You Covered Everything. I Also Love Your List For The Diaper Bag. Thanks So Much For Posting This Helpful Information.

Great add for the q tips! I wouldn't necessarily bring a razor just because I never have to shave but I know a lot of people that will definitely appreciate that! Thanks!
