The Mother of All "Green" Smoothies

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

I am not typically a smoothie drinker. I like my food whole but it is nice to get a ton of nutrients packed into one little drink. Since this "green" smoothie is actually purple you can totally trick your kids who don't like veggies. Is it lying if it's for their benefit? Nah. This is one of my favorite smoothies but really you can throw whatever you want into it and it will come out awesome 90% of the time.

My Lo loves fruits and veggies so no tricking goes on here. She was the one that was cramming spinach to fill in all the holes. When I asked her what veggies we should put into it she quickly yelled, "Carrots!"

Then she yelled oranges but being as how we put bananas and berries in already I though maybe the orange julius green smoothie was for a later date....how would that taste? Oranges with spinach and carrots? Hopefully just like and orange julius...I love those things.

Side tracked! So anyways if your little one hates veggies, lie. and if they're like Lo and thinks they're the bomb dot com then have them help! It's really good for little ones to know that veggies can taste good (even the ones that they don't like)

In this "green smoothie" we do not measure anything at all. We just grabbed and tossed, which is how a good smoothie is made in my opinion, but I will try and give my best estimate for you.

Toss in:

2 peeled bananas
3 toddler handfuls of blueberries (1/2 cupish), frozen
The blackberries are froze together so just dump a chunk in (1 1/2 cupish)
2 large organic carrots, peeled-cut in half
5 frozen strawberries
fill in all the extra space with spinach
pour almond milk in (1/2 cupish)
squirt some agave on top (2 tbsish)

So that's it! Make sure some of your fruits are frozen so it's thick and you don't have to add ice. If you add ice I think it gets watery. I buy a lot of fruit in the summer and freeze it so I have fresh smoothies all winter long without having to pay $8 for a little carton of berries.

Make sure you blend, blend and blend some more. The seeds in the berries and the fiber in the spinach take a while to process or it will be seedy and chalky feeling. You'll know when it's done :)

Don't forget to try it before you pore it into cups to see if it needs anything else!

I need to try! I have been on a smoothie kick lately! Not to replace a meal or anything, but just because I am craving it haha.
